Weekly Basketball Awards Announced by the WAC

The first week of the 2022-23 college basketball season has come and gone. And on Monday, the WAC announced its men’s and women’s Players and Freshmen of the Week.

Tyson, Holiman Win Weekly Award on Men’s Side

It comes as no surprise on the men’s side that Seattle U guard Cameron Tyson earned Player of the Week honors. The redshirt junior had 35 points in the season opener at UC San Diego. And on Sunday, Tyson had 32 points and knocked down eight 3-pointers in a win over Portland State. Thru two games, Tyson has hit 15 3-pointers, and is averaging 33.5 points per game while shooting 56 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from 3-point land. Along with the points, Tyson is also averaging 5.5 rebounds.

The Redhawks have five days off before heading to Oregon to take on the University of Portland on Saturday. After racking up 23 wins in 2021-22, Seattle U is off to a 3-0 start in 2022-23.

UTRGV freshman guard Adante’ Holiman won Freshman of the Week honors. Holiman came off the bench against Kansas State to score 13 points in his collegiate debut on Monday. And in a rout of Southwestern Adventist on Saturday, Holiman had six points, five assists and four rebounds. UTRGV is 1-1 and looks to improve to 2-1 on Monday night when the Vaqueros host St. Francis (IL).

Gillen, Harper Earn Award on the Women’s Side

Utah Tech guard Breaunna Gillen earns the first WAC Player of the Week honor for 2022-23. Gillen average a double-double in the first week of the season of 19 points and 10.5 assists. In the Trailblazers season opener at Washington, Gillen had 21 points and 11 assists. And against Benedictine Mesa, Gillen had 17 points and 10 assists. Since her true freshman year in 2019-20, Gillen has started in 40 of a possible 63 games. Gillen started all 29 contests in 2021-22 for head coach JD Gustin. The Trailblazers go on a three-game road trip to Utah State Tuesday, Kansas City Friday and Kansas State Sunday.

Grand Canyon freshman forward Alaina Harper takes home WAC Freshman of the Week honors. The 6-3 native of Hartland, Wisconsin averaged 7.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest in week one of the 2022-23 season. In 10 minutes of action on Saturday against Grambling State, Harper had eight points and seven rebounds in a 63-56 Lopes win.

Top Play Goes to the Shot Heard Round the Country

Hitting the game-winning shot? Check. Hitting the game-winning shot in your first game with a new team? Check. Knocking off a Power 6 opponent? Check.

Okay, you get the point. Sam Houston’s Lamar Wilkerson wins the award for WAC Top Play. Qua Grant found Wilkerson along on the right wing for a wide open 3-point attempt. And when it hit nothing but the bottom of the net, Sam Houston walked out of the Lloyd Noble Center with one of the best non-conference wins the WAC will have in 2022-23. Thus, it rightly earned WAC Top Play honors.
