The offseason is upon us folks and with plenty of movement around the WAC already underway, it’s about time to begin a transfer tracker.
UPDATED 4/19/2021
Added to the tracker is the Texas 4 schools, Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin who officially join the WAC on July 1, 2021. So, might as well get very familiar with their current rosters and who are coming and going well before then.
Make sure to check back as we update the transfer tracker throughout the offseason. Things may get a little hectic. But, updates should be made daily.
The biggest thing to remember about eligibility going forward is the extra year afforded to players by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic essentially wipes the 2020-2021 season off the books. So, if a player was a freshman at the beginning of the season, they retain four years of eligibility. If they transfer, they will be required to sit unless they are a graduate transfer. Things will get murky or confusing but I think all folks involved are in new territory, not just fans and media.

2020-2021 Stats: 0.8 PPG & 0.4 RPG in 10 games (0 starts)
Eligibility left: 3 years
Overview: Hunter is the first incoming transfer from the portal for the Lancers so far. The 6-6 guard is a great pick up for Rick Croy, only failing to reach double-digit scoring five times this season. He’ll join a strong returning backcourt next season. In the paint will be Gonzaga transfer Pavel Zakharov who is one of the biggest under the radar transfers in the conference.

The second lancer to enter the portal, Caruso has entered the transfer portal after just 4 appearances this past season. This comes after sitting out 2019-2020 after transferring in from Incarnate Word.

Overview:
The abrupt end to the Chicago State Men’s squad season was surely new territory for anyone. But to now lose the top two scorers from the last two seasons is a big loss for the program as they enter their last season in the WAC. Don’t let that poor two-game average fool you, Lewis is great scorer and averaged 12.2 PPG in 2019-2020. While Johnson has a career average of 14.4 PPG at the Division-I level. Both will be fine spending their last seasons in college basketball elsewhere, especially after the season they had. Next in the portal for Chicago State is senior forward Carlo Marble who stepped into a bigger role for the Cougars in their very short season.

Overview:
Bryce Drew has brought in two former top-60 recruits with Igiehon (6-10, 245) and Cherry (6-8, 220). Both have not had the ideal college careers at high major programs thus far, but are high impact recruits for the Antelopes as early as next season given immediate eligibility waivers. Igiehon struggled with injuries during his time in Louisville, but if healthy could have a great career in Phoenix for Drew. 4/8 The Antelopes added a third incoming transfer on Thursday. This time it is Big Ten transfer and former Cornhusker, Yvan Ouedraogo, a 6-9 245 French big.

Overview: As quickly as Brown committed to the Aggies, he was gone. He never played a game for New Mexico State as a walk-on from Clarendon College in September. Next in the transfer portal for the Aggies is redshirt freshman Rashaun Agee. The 6-7 forward made one appearance for New Mexico State this past season and has opted to look for playing time elsewhere.
The Aggies added three more players to the portal this past week with the biggest losses being promising freshman Marcus Watson and key rotational player C.J. Roberts. Both players had big roles off of the bench for the Aggies this past season but have decided to continue their careers as well.

Overview:
Hutchens played in 1 game for the Redhawks for about 3 minutes this season. No huge loss for coach Jim Hayford there. Maybe a more swing and a miss loss is Angelo Stuart, who announced his decision to enter the transfer portal around mid-March. The former Region 16 Player of the Year and NJCAA Div.-I 2nd-Team All-American came in with big expectations in his one year in Seattle. Though he never quite found his role in the rotation this past season, his JUCO pedigree will certainly find him another landing spot. The latest Redhawk in the portal is 6-8 forward Jarred Pearre who joined the program as a transfer from CSUN last offseason. Snubbed for frontcourt minutes by fellow newcomers Emeka Udenyi (JC transfer) and Kobe Williamson (Fr.), he will move on to his third school in four years, maybe back home in Texas this time around?
4/8 Trammell burst on to the college basketball scene as a Seattle Redhawk this past season. Just a sophomore, having attended City College of San Francisco for one year. His scoring during his one year in Seattle was prolific, reaching 30-points+ three times and only failing to reach double-digits twice. His move isn’t surprising given his successful first year playing Division-I basketball, but it certainly doesn’t make it hurt any less for Jim Hayford and company.

2020-2021 Stats: 10.6 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 1.2 APG
Eligibility left: 3 years
Possible Destination: No rumored interest at the time of this publication
Overview:
Gaffney’s departure came mid-season, after being a key piece in the Texans front-court at the Division-II level. The 6-7 senior never made his Division-I debut and ultimately opted to transfer. The loss of 6-9 forward Ngalamulume is a hit to the Texans’ already undersized front-court. Lastly, Javontae Hopkins who had a bigger role last season for Tarleton is on the move after a shrunken amount of playing time at the D-I level.
4/7 Dotsenko is a huge loss for the Texans as his combination of height and range made him a dangerous inside-out threat in Tarleton State’s small ball style of play. A transfer from NAIA Freed-Hardeman University (TN) where he had a stellar freshman season, the Russian International has decided to look elsewhere to continue his basketball career.

Overview: After a hard fought yet tough season to get through, the Vaqueros are experiencing a mass exodus with a total five players in the transfer portal. UTRGV is essentially losing four starters heading into next season for a new head coach who will have some very competitive in-state programs joining the conference in July. With Rhea being the first transfer domino to drop in mid-February already choosing a new landing spot, next up will likely be 2x WAC DPOY Javon Levi who has no shortage of suitors for his services. 4/8 This week Jamal Gaines and Connor Raines were added to the Vaqueros outbound transfers list. Raines had more of a role for UTRGV this season, including some important play off of the bench down the stretch for interim head coach Jai Steadman.

Eligibility left: 1 year
Next Stop: Committed to Weber State on 4/9
Overview:
Overton hits the transfer portal as a graduate transfer and will be very sought after. The scoring and slashing ability he displayed from the perimeter this past season will have him watching the offers come in. However, the prediction from our fearless leader Kyle McDonald makes perfect sense, and a move to BYU from UVU has happened in the past. Brinson on the other hand found playing time in Orem but maybe didn’t have quite the season he would have liked given some injuries he dealt with. He would have likely found more playing time next season, especially with Overton gone.

Overview:
Bennett cited coaching changes at Lamar as the reason for his decision to enter the transfer portal. Either way as the Cardinals begin their move to the WAC, it will be tough sledding with the turnover. Joining him are double-digit scorers and fellow starters Anderson Klopp and Kasen Harrison. All three departures are a big blow for the Cardinals, but with the departure of head coach Tic Price it appears the move to the WAC spells a new beginning for the program. I would expect more players in the portal given.
Mouka became the fourth Cardinal to enter the transfer portal this past week, with the reigning Southland Defensive Player of the Year opting to finish his career elsewhere. Mouka should have no problem finding a new landing spot, still this is another big blow for the currently unnamed next head coach of the program.

Overview:
The Bearkats are experiencing a similar exodus of their best players to that of their fellow Texas 4 group mates. Sam Houston State may have it a bit tougher as coach Jason Hooten’s squad who finished tied for third-place with Stephen F. Austin have two of their top three scorers in the transfer portal and several key front-court pieces gone as well. This is a natural part of the college game nowadays and the offers pouring in for Bryce Monroe and Zach Nutall are just an example of why players enter the portal in such high volumes these days.

Overview:
As the day began and the compiling of transfer movement in and out of the WAC began it appeared the Lumberjacks were getting off a little too easy. Like their fellow Texas 4 programs who will officially join the conference in July, a mass exodus is happening. By the end of the business day they went from having two seldom used reserve players in the portal to having their second leading scorer Cameron Johnson and rotational big man Charlies Daniels in there as well. Like anyone else I would have loved to see these players take the floor in the WAC but taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility handed down by the NCAA isn’t a half bad idea.
