Tarleton State Runs UVU Out of the UCCU Center in First-Ever WAC Win

Tarleton State brought that Texas heat with them on Saturday night. Montre Gipson had a game-high 24 points and Tarleton State hit 9 3-pointers to pickup their first-ever win in the WAC, 70-62 over Utah Valley at the UCCU Center.

With the win, Tarleton State improves to 1-5 in WAC play. Utah Valley drops to 4-1 in WAC play.

As a team, Tarleton shot 45 percent from the field and a blistering 56 percent from beyond the arc.

Leading the Texans was Montre Gipson. Gipson had a rebound night from Friday night when he didn’t score a point in the Texans loss at UVU. It was a much different story on Saturday for Gipson who was 4-5 from 3-point land and 10-10 from the free throw line.

Gipson was one of four Texans in double figures.

Jonathan Jackson Jr. scored seven of his 16 points in the games early moments and helped the Texans jump out to quick 12-5 lead, a lead which they would never let go.

Shakur Daniel and Tahj Small both had 10 points for the Texans, as well.

Trailing 31-24 at the half, Utah Valley came out swinging. They chopped the deficit to just one point. But, the Wolverines were unable to close the gap any further.

Tarleton immediately responded with an emphatic Jonathan Jackson Jr. dunk and Shakur Daniel 3-pointer. Tarleton continued to pour it on, and any time Utah Valley would attempt to make a run, Tarleton had a response.

Leading Utah Valley was Trey Woodbury who had a team-high 13 points. It was a rough game for the Wolverines offensively. No one else scored in double figures. It’s tough to win any game when only one player finishes in double figures.

Leading scorer Jamison Overton had just 8 points before exiting in the first half with an injury. Fardaws Aimaq and Evan Cole had 17 points combined. And it was just a really bad night on the offensive side for the Wolverines.

Unless Tarleton State schedules another opponent, the Texans are off for the next two weeks. Utah Valley has a week off before hosting Dixie State in the I-15 rivalry.
