Seattle U Redhawks Women’s Basketball 2021-22 Season Preview

For the Seattle U Redhawks women’s basketball team, the end of the 2020-21 season was brutal. Four games combined against GCU and California Baptist was not what the doctor ordered. But, that is the way it had to play out. Seattle lost all four of those games and then fell to New Mexico State in the first game of the WAC Tournament. The good news is that Suzy Barcomb’s squad returns a lot of its squad from 2020-21 including its three leading scorers in McKenzi Williams, Bree Calhoun and Georgia Kehoe. Question is, how can Seattle get over the hump especially in a revamped WAC? That is a major theme heading into the 2021-22 season.

Head Coach

Suzy Barcomb, 6th Season
Overall: 383-245
At Seattle: 60-90 Overall
2020-21: 11-14 Overall, 6-8 WAC
Postseason: Lost in First Round of WAC Tournament

Key Newcomers

Jadynn Alexander, 5-10, GR, G (Hawai’i)
Barbara Rangel, 6-2, GR, C (Hawai’i)

Key Departures

Key Returners

McKenzi Williams, 5-5, RSSR, G
Bree Calhoun, 5-6, SR, G
Georgia Kehoe, 6-3, JR, F
Courtney Murphy, 6-0, SR, G
Irena Korolenko, 6-0, SO, F

Predicted WAC Finish

The end of the 2020-21 season was certainly a disappointing way for Suzy Barcomb and company to finish considering that prior to the losing streak the Redhawks were right in the thick of a crowded race for 2nd and an NCAA tournament berth.

However, there is reason for optimism in the Pacific Northwest as Barcomb returns her top three scorers from a year ago in McKenzi Williams (15.2 Points Per Game), Bree Calhoun (12.7 Points Per Game), and Georgia Kehoe (10.9 Points Per Game). Williams led the team in three point makes while Calhoun led in steals as well as assists and Kehoe in rebounds.

They’re joined by two University of Hawai’i grad transfers in Jadynn Alexander and Barbara Rangel.

A year ago, Alexander was the Rainbow Wahine’s second leading scorer at 10.4 points per game and led Hawai’i in minutes played at just over 33.3 per contest. She was also second in made 3-pointers (27) and a Big West Honorable Mention pick in 2020-21. While in Honolulu, Alexander also earned All-Big West Defensive Team selections as a junior and senior.

Rangel played in 28 games at Hawai’i and will reunite with Calhoun, a former teammate at Moorpark College.

Schedule News

According to the May schedule draft, the Redhawks would open with three of five games on the road (New Mexico State, Utah Valley, and Dixie State). They’d have CBU and Chicago State at home in that stretch. Their debut against the Texas four would be at home against Abilene Christian in late January.

If Seattle is to compete for a WAC title they’ll have to improve upon a 28.9% team three point shooting percentage and a -1.7 rebounding margin last year.
