WBB: Records fell aplenty in week 2
Earle, Brown, and Lemon reached player milestones or set records while Miller reached a coaching milestone in a busy week of #WACHoops wbb action

Records are meant to be broken…
And across the WAC they certainly were in this second week of conference play.
First, on Thursday night, Emily Isaacson became Utah Tech’s all time leader in career 3-pointers made during a loss at UT Arlington.
A few hours later GCU coach Molly Miller recorded her 100th win as the Lopes skipper in a 71-59 win over Utah Valley.
In that same game Tiarra Brown, Miller’s first recruit at GCU, became the program’s DI era scoring leader with a nine point and five rebound performance. She’s eight rebounds away from becoming the program’s all-time leader on the glass when they tip-off next Thursday at Moody Coliseum against ACU.

Then on Saturday a pair of players added their names into the program record books.
In ACU’s 83-55 win over Seattle at Moody Coliseum, Bella Earle crossed the 1,000 point career scoring plateau with 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

And in CBU’s 77-50 win over Utah Valley, Khloe Lemon scored a career-high 39 points, hitting 11 of the Lancers 19 3-pointers.

Lemon tied Abby Scott of New Mexico State (2013-2014) for the WAC’s record in made 3-pointers for a game and set CBU’s single-game record in that category. 39 points is also the current CBU record for points in a single game for their Division I era, set by Britney Thomas in a 2019 game against Seattle U.
UT Arlington and Tarleton also went 2-0 on the week.
The Lady Mavs recorded a pair of 20 point wins over Utah Tech and Southern Utah at home. They’re 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2019-2020 when the Lady Mavs finished third in SunBelt Conference regular season play and lost in a tournament quarterfinal.
Meanwhile, the Texans averaged nearly 70 points per game in a pair of wins against Utah Tech and Southern Utah. Tarleton hit 12 3-pointers in Saturday’s win over the Trailblazers, a record for the Bill Brock era. Nikki Van Wyk led the way with five makes from beyond the arc.

Week 3 Preview:
All games on ESPN+
Thursday, January 16:
Tarleton (11-7, 2-1) at California Baptist University (5-11, 2-0) 12 P.M. PT:
When the year started the question for Tarleton was if they could score enough to keep themselves in games?
After three games in WAC play it appears that the answer to that question is yes. The Texans have scored 60 or more points in six straight games against Division I opponents and are averaging 70 a contest in conference games so far.
Tarleton, allowing teams to shoot 29.4 percent from 3-point distance, will visit a Lancer side that hit a program record 20 3-pointers in this game last year.
After a slow start in non-conference play CBU has won five out of seven games and three straight, posting their largest margin of victory in that stretch on Saturday.
Claudia Fiel had six of the Lancer 24 assists in their win over Utah Valley, tying a season high with Anaiyah Tu’ua missing the game due to a thumb injury.
UT Arlington (8-6, 3-0) at Utah Valley (9-6, 1-2) 6 P.M. MT:
The Lady Mavs took care of business during their conference opening homestand and travel for their first trip of the WAC year.
It’s to a Wolverine side that has lost two straight by an average of 19, although that final margin against the Lopes on Thursday was not indicative of how close the game actually was.
Koi Love and Avery Brittingham have continued to established themselves as early Player of the Year candidates with Love leading the way in terms of newcomer accolades.
Grand Canyon (15-2, 2-0) at Abilene Christian (12-5, 1-1) 6 P.M. CT:
This is the biggest game of Thursday’s slate which features two offenses in the country’s top 75 for scoring.
GCU is 0-2 outside the Mountain Time Zone this year with losses against then AP top 25 Oregon and collegeinsider.com top 10 Middle Tennessee.
Meanwhile, ACU has never beaten the Lopes since Miller arrived in Phoenix. GCU’s average margin of victory in four matchups is 8.5 points per game and seven in the two matchups played at Moody Coliseum.
Seattle U (3-12, 0-2) at Utah Tech (4-11, 0-2) 7 P.M. MT:
Someone’s going to get their first win in WAC play on Thursday night.
Seattle was competitive in their opener, leading CBU at the half, before a 28 percent second half shooting performance doomed them to an opening loss. At ACU, the Redhawks shot just under 40 percent but 31 turnovers led to 31 ACU points in a 28 point loss.
Meanwhile, Utah Tech shot nearly 43 percent and 46 percent from 3-point range in a nine point loss at Tarleton on Saturday.
Idle: Southern Utah
Saturday, January 18:
Abilene Christian (12-5, 1-1) at California Baptist University (5-11, 2-0) 1 P.M. PT:
Last year at Moody Coliseum these two sides put up a combined 186 points in an ACU double overtime win.
CBU leads the series 3-1 with an undefeated mark in Riverside and an average margin of victory of nine points per game. The average margin of victory in their four previous meetings is six points per game.
Khloe Lemon has been the Lancers leading scorer since returning at Seattle to start WAC play, averaging 28.5 points per game on 63.6 percent 3-point shooting. Meanwhile, Grace Schmidt has recorded double-digit points in 10 of her last 12 games for CBU.
Payton Hull has become a Player of the Year candidate for ACU, leading the conference in scoring at 18.5 points per game while shooting 45 percent and 34 percent from 3-point range.
Bella Earle had a nine game streak of scoring in double-digits snapped in the Utah Valley loss but bounced back with a 23 point performance against Seattle U. And don’t forget Emma Troxell, who has averaged 13 points per game over her last seven.
In short, expect lots of offense in this one to finish the week for both sides.
Utah Valley (9-6, 1-2) at Utah Tech (4-11, 0-2) 2 P.M. MT:
There’s nothing like coming home to a rivalry game and that’s what the Trailblazers will return to Burns Arena from after their first Texas trip.
Utah Tech starts the week on a seven game losing streak and has not beaten a Division I opponent since a November 23 win at McNeese State.
Since moving to Division I Utah Tech leads the series 4-3.
Utah Valley has shot just 31.6 percent in their last two losses.
Seattle U (3-11, 0-2) at Southern Utah (2-14, 0-3) 2 P.M. MT:
Both sides have combined to record just one win against a Division I opponent starting the week and that’s held by the Redhawks over East Texas A&M.
It’s a matchup of teams that have struggled to find their offensive footing this season, ranking seventh (Redhawks) and ninth (TBirds) in scoring offense in the WAC so far.
Grand Canyon (15-2, 2-0) at Tarleton (11-7, 2-1) 7 P.M. CT:
Tarleton so far has been better offensively, averaging 70 points a game in their first three games to start WAC play.
But this will be the biggest challenge for a Texan defense ranked second in the WAC for defensive 3-point percentage and leading in scoring defense.
GCU has not been held below 70 points in more than a month, dating back to a 69-66 win over Arizona on December 5.
In that span the Lopes have not shot worse than 30 percent from 3-point range and 45.5 percent in total for a game.
Laura Erikstrup has reached double-digit scoring in each game during the streak while Alyssa Durazo-Frescas saw a streak of 10 straight games in double-digit points snapped on Thursday against Utah Valley. Durazo-Frescas did keep an 11 game streak in which she’s hit multiple 3-pointers intact however. Trinity San Antonio is ranked 21st nationally in assists per game.
