Travel: How to travel the Utah schools affordably
During this holiday travel season I'll show you how I made a trip to Utah Tech, just two and a half weeks before Christmas...
ST. GEORGE, Utah- One of the things I love about the WAC is that we have schools in five different states. From Washington State to California to Arizona to Utah and into Texas.
It is my goal to travel the conference a little more this year because the only conference city I’ve visited is Phoenix along with making a trip to Las Vegas for the 2021 WAC Tournament.
With that in mind I’m going to show you how I made a quick two-day trip this week to Utah Tech in St. George with cost control in mind.
I’m based in Southern California, which means I have access to three airports within roughly a two hour drive.
There are no direct flights into St. George. If choosing to fly into town a layover will be involved, either in Phoenix, Denver or Salt Lake City.
In this case, I flew out on Tuesday from Santa Ana to Salt Lake on Spirit for $140, including seat choice.
I spent the night in Salt Lake at La Quinta Inn and Suites by Wyndham Salt Lake Airport for $89. The hotel is all of five minutes from the airport and there’s plenty of dining options in neighboring hotels.
It was $22 for a burger and a drink. Throw some cheddar cheese on the burger from the Holiday Inn bistro one hotel over and you won’t regret it.
There’s a shuttle which runs from Las Vegas into St. George and Cedar City, which will save you tons. Fare costs between $40 and $60 dollars depending on the kind of bus you choose. I have linked the website below.
Going from Salt Lake into St. George is about a five hour trip with two stops for $65. Then from St. George into Vegas for my return flight ended up costing $48.
I chose to stay at the St. George’s Inn and Suites for $56 for one night. Going home I ended up having to book a flight on Spirit into Santa Ana for $40 because my original flight was delayed 12 hours.
There are plenty of good dining options in St. George. But on this trip, I had breakfast at Bear Paw Cafe before the game on Wednesday.
Shoutout to Dallas Clifford for the recommendation. $22 got me a ham and cheese omelette, coffee, an orange juice and an excellent small town dining experience.
I had about three hours until hotel check in so I chose to walk around downtown St. George and take in the sights on a warm 70 degree day in December.
If traveling St. George without a rental car, ride share options such as Uber and Lyft are available and with minimal waiting.
In total, I spent $300 for the two and a half days once a refund comes through from Breeze Airways customer service.
