Have you ever seen a conference tournament in college basketball where the regular season champion was not the top seed? Where Team A finishes 15-3 in conference play and Team B finishes 14-4 but Team B gets the higher seed in the conference tournament?

Well, then you weren’t paying attention to the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournament in 2023.

Trey Woodbury and the Utah Valley men’s basketball team were the outright regular season champions, finishing 15-3 in WAC play. Tracy Mason’s Southern Utah squad was the outright regular season champions on the women’s side with a 16-2 mark.

And neither regular season champion was the top-seed at the 2023 WAC Tournament at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
