WBB: CBU Offense Goes Crazy to Force a First Place Tie
Three Lancers score 20 or more points as CBU overcomes a slow start to set a season high in points scored
RIVERSIDE, Ca- The start to Saturday afternoon’s women’s basketball game between CBU and Stephen F. Austin was not very good for either side.
Missed shots, lack of pace, and an overall sluggish start helped the Ladyjacks take a 14-12 lead after 10 minutes.
That was about the last time SFA enjoyed any kind of success on Saturday afternoon in its visit to the West Coast.
Chloe Webb, Khloe Lemon and the rest of the Lancers came to life and with their foot to the pedal over the next 30 minutes, rolled to a 87-75 win over the Ladyjacks at Fowler Events Center.
With the win CBU (16-2, 8-1), 18th in this week’s collegeinsider.com mid-major poll, remains tied in the loss column for first place after GCU defeated UT Arlington 70-35.
“That first quarter was two teams struggling to get comfortable against each other but we really got things going in that third quarter,” Lancers coach Jarrod Olson said. “We’ve had to run with some different lineups this year and seeing different players step up has been nice to see. They’ve really done a nice job of responding to that overtime loss at Abilene Christian a few games ago.”
CBU started the second quarter on a 11-2 run which gave the Lancers a 25-16 lead, their largest of the first half.
Behind a pair of timely 3-pointers from Lydia Cook-Wiggins and Tyler McCliment-Call, SFA kept themselves within one possession.
However, Filipa Barros hit one of CBU’s 14 makes from 3-point distance to send the Lancers to halftime with a 38-32 lead.
“We came with everything, played as a team, and got a big win today,” Barros said. “Making the transition from international play to the American game has been tough. But our coaches have really made me feel confident in my skillset and how it fits this game. That confidence has allowed me to perform so well this year.”
Halftime didn’t slow down the Lancer offense as CBU outscored Stephen F. Austin 34-14, shooting 11-18 in third quarter action to push their lead to 72-46.
Kyla Deck’s 3-pointer cut the SFA deficit to three with 8:28 left.
However, the Lancers outscored SFA 32-9 from there to create a comfortable lead.
Of the nearly 35 and a half minutes in which CBU had a lead, 13 of those minutes were by 20-plus points.
It was a historic afternoon for CBU, a sixth year program in Division I, as three Lancers (Chloe Webb, Filipa Barros, and Khloe Lemon) scored 20 or more points for the first time in the Division I era.
Webb had 24 points, six rebounds and four assists in 36 minutes. Khloe Lemon hit five 3-pointers as part of her 23 points while Barros was on triple-double watch finishing with 22 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.
“We weren’t sure what we had at the beginning of the year after graduations and portal losses but as we began to play together we knew this could be a good team,” Webb said.
Kyla Deck led SFA (13-7, 7-2) with 14 points while Kurstyn Harden and Trinity Moore each had 12 points for a Ladyjack side that shot just 31.9 percent and lost the rebounding battle 53-40.
SFA returns home for a few days before traveling out West again to face Utah Valley on Thursday.
CBU is at Seattle on Saturday after a Thursday bye.
