34 Days, The Madness Begins, and More WAC Hoops News
Is it Nov. 6 yet? 34 days. Yes, 34 days. It seems like an eternity but it will be here before you know it. At least it will take our minds off of some awful NFL primetime games.
Okay, sorry to all you Swifties out there who jumped on the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce train. But, for the love of basketball, 34 days can’t come soon enough.
My first trip of the year is booked. I am heading back to Huntsville, Texas to watch Utah Valley take on former WAC foe Sam Houston in the WAC/Conference USA Challenge on Nov. 9.
The following evening, I will be at College Park Center to watch the UT Arlington Lady Mavs host Lamar as part of Homecoming weekend. On Saturday, KT Turner and the Mavericks in their homecoming game against a foe that has not been released yet.
Two days later, I will be heading to Natchitoches, Louisiana to watch AJ Cajuste, Day Day Hall and the SFA men’s basketball team try to get some redemption against Northwestern State.
It will be a fantastic start to the 2023-24 season.
There will be lots of content, both written and video, from the trip.
One thing of note…we will have post game breakdowns of select games every night that a WAC team plays. 15-20 minutes of breaking down a game, perhaps getting a broadcaster on or a beat writer to share their thoughts, as well. So, again, make sure you subscribe to the WAC Hoops Nation YouTube Channel.
Pineapple on Pizza
If you remember, on the podcast episode with SFA women’s basketball head coach Leonard Bishop, the question of whether or not pineapple belong on pizza was raised. Bishop, who is a self-proclaimed pizza connoisseur, said no.
During their Summer trip to Italy, Bishop and SFA confirmed that pineapple does not belong on pizza.
Last week, the question was raised to GCU forwards Gabe McGlothan and Derrick Michael Xzavierro as well as Bryce Drew’s son, Bryson.
As you can see, the answer to the great mystery of pineapple on pizza question is NO!
The Madness is Happening
Midnight Madness is one of those college basketball traditions that live on no matter how much realignment takes place.
Utah Valley marketing director Jeff Ellgren and his team came up with a cool idea for the Wolverines, as you can see in the video below.
These are great opportunities for students and fans to get to know players and coaches, and to continue building excitement for a new season and new opportunities.
Seattle U Walk-On Gets a Surprise
Videos of walk-ons being awarded scholarships are always emotional. The setup, the anxiety, the curiosity and excitement all boil into one. Well, at the Redhawk Center this past week, a walk-on got a surprise. A well-deserved surprise.
Matthew Levis has been with the Seattle U men’s basketball program since 2020-21, increasing his playing time each season, culminating in playing some big minutes in 2022-23.
Thus, why head coach Chris Victor made a decision.
It’s good stuff. Levis should play even more minutes in 2023-24 as the Redhawks look to win another WAC title.
ACU F Gets Some Grief
What do members of the ACU Men’s Basketball team have against teammate Leo Bettiol? I mean, the 6’8 sophomore seems like a quiet, well-mannered individual.
Then again, I am not in the ACU facilities or around the program enough to know so perhaps his teammates are on to something. Either way, this video is pretty entertaining.
