On Tuesday, two guards in the Western Athletic Conference were added to the Lou Henson Player of the Year watch list.
The Lou Henson National Player of the Year award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I basketball.
California Baptist guard Taran Armstrong and Seattle U guard Cam Tyson have been named to the watch list.
Taran Armstrong
Armstrong is off to a strong start after a standout freshman season. The WAC Freshman of the Year leads the Lancers is scoring at 16.0 points per game. Armstrong is also averaging 5.6 rebounds and just over four assists per game.
On Monday night against Minnesota, Armstrong put on a clinic in the second half. Armstrong scored all 24 of his points in the second half and hit five 3-pointers in an overtime loss. Against Long Beach State in the season opener, Armstrong had 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. In the Lancers biggest win of the Division I era at Washington, Armstrong had 18 points, six assists and five rebounds.
The 6-6 Burnie, Tasmania native is the floor general for the Lancers. And since stepping on campus prior to the 2021-22 season, has started in 30 of 31 games.
CBU is currently 3-2 and faces Southern Illinois Wednesday night in the SoCal Challenge finale.
Cameron Tyson
The 6-3 guard is off to a big time start for the Redhawks. Tyson leads the nation in scoring at 28.3 points per game. The Houston transfer also leads the nation in 3-pointers per game (6.33). Tyson is ninth nationally in 3-pointers made with 19 and is shooting 51.4 percent from 3-point land.
In the season opener at UC San Diego, Tyson had 35 points. At the Redhawk Center, in a win over Portland State, Tyson had 32 points. And in a win at Portland, Tyson had 18 points.
Tyson has had to bear more of the load right now with Riley Grigsby dealing with an injury. And the WAC Player of the Year candidate has not disappointed. Seattle U is looking to improve to 5-0 when the Redhawks host Pacific Lutheran on Wednesday night.
