MBB | Mavericks Stun the Dons in Massive Road Win

The UT Arlington Mavericks have been close. Oh, so close to a big win week in and week out in 2022-23.

And the Mavericks have been on the short end of those ‘oh, so close’ contests.

But, in its second to last non-conference game of the 2022-23 season, the Mavericks finally broke through and found themselves on the right side of the ‘oh, so close’ outcome.

Aaron Cash and Kyron Gibson each had 12 points as UT Arlington stunned San Francisco, 68-63, on Monday night at The Sobrato Center.

Marion Humphrey was also in double figures with 11 points. And freshman guard Chendall Weaver finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.

The Mavericks shot 45.6 percent from the field in the first half en route to a 38-27 halftime lead.

It was a lead the Mavericks needed heading into the second half. UTA shot just 33 percent and did not hit a 3-pointer in the second half. But, the Mavericks were able to hang on for the Quad 2 win over the Dons.

In fact, UT Arlington led from start to finish. Well, technically, the Mavericks lead for 38:50. But, San Francisco never held a lead on Monday night.

Marion Humphrey’s dunk to start the game got the Mavericks off and running. Shemar Wilson’s layup just a few minutes later made it 11-3 Mavs with 16:43 to play.

A 14-0 run midway through the first half pushed the UTA lead to 15 with 6:04 left in the half.

Chendall Weaver’s second-chance layup at the 1:43 mark was the final bucket of the first half.

And, despite USF turning up the pressure in the second half and outshooting the Mavs, UTA was able to hang on for dear life. And the biggest win of the 2022-23 season.

The Dons cut the lead to four courtesy of an 8-0 run with 50 seconds to play. But, Chendall Weaver and Marion Humphrey hit five free throws down the stretch to seal the 68-63 win.

UTA improves to 5-7 overall. The Mavericks head just down the road to take on Cal on Wednesday in their final non-conference game.
