Hunter Schofield has Solidified Himself as The Trailblazer GOAT

It’s an extremely rare sight to see Hunter Schofield show emotion during a basketball game. The senior forward is the definition of cool, calm, and collected. But on Saturday night, Schofield showed a new side that we’ve all been waiting for.

When the buzzer sounded on the overtime 80-75 victory over Utah Valley, Schofield spiked the ball into the ground and met his senior teammate Mark Hatch in the air to celebrate.

Scoring 26 points against the WAC’s most formidable big man, Fardaws Aimaq, was just the latest of Schofield’s great achievements as a Trailblazer. It was also another cornerstone to build the argument that Hunter Schofield is the greatest Trailblazer basketball player of all time.

Transferring to Dixie State via Salt Lake Community College, the forward made an immediate impact in the 2019-20 season. Alongside another Trailblazer great, Jack Pagenkopf, Schofield led the team to a Division II, RMAC regular-season title and a birth in the DII NCAA tournament. The team did not get to participate on the national stage due to Covid shutdowns. Through the ‘20-21 Division I transition season, Schofield continued to show his dominance that has made the jump into our current season.

By the Numbers…

Schofield’s Career by the Numbers (as of 2/21/2022)

  • 78 Games played
  • 1,158 total points
  • 14.8 points per game
  • 447 field goals made
  • 888 field goal attempts
  • .503 field goal percentage
  • 212 free throws made
  • 466 career rebounds
  • 5.97 rebounds per game
  • 46 career blocks

Stats to Greatness

Eight of the previous stats put Schofield in the top-10 of the Trailblazer record books. He finds himself at fourth all-time in total points. And is likely to move up to third by the end of his final season in St. George. What makes this even more incredible is that he will end his career almost 30 games short of the next closest name in the record books. The Spanish Fork, Utah native’s games played are a huge factor in the points-per record. Sitting at third all-time on the list, Schofield is the only player in the top-3 who played more than one season for Dixie State. The two leaders only played 27 games. He also finds himself currently third in FG made and attempted, eighth in FG percentage and free throws made, fourth in career rebounds, sixth in rebounds per game, and tied for fifth in career blocks.

With four games left in his final collegiate season, odds are very high that Schofield will be in the top-3 in nearly every offensive category. Schofield also set the program’s single-season scoring record in the 2019-20 season with 491 total points. Schofield also boasts an impressive off-court resume as well. With a 3.95 GPA in the ‘20-21 school year, he was named a CoSIDA second-team All-American and earned All-WAC academic honors. Oh, and did I mention his wife is pregnant? With twins?

There are former Trailblazers who find their names higher on the record books than Hunter Schofield. There have been seasons that Dixie State has had huge success led by those names. None of those players set these records at college basketball’s highest level, in two shortened seasons. If you asked him. he would say he isn’t. But after watching his historic career, I say that Hunter Schofield is the best basketball player to ever wear a Trailblazer uniform.
