MBB: GCU Falls Flat in Hall of Fame Classic Opener

Monday afternoon at the T-Mobile Center was a chance for the GCU men’s basketball team to make a statement.

The preseason favorite, as voted by both the media and coaches, hasn’t really gotten going thus far in the 2022-23 season.

And on Monday, at the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City, the Lopes are still facing that same dilemma.

Craig Porter Jr. and Quincy Ballard each had 14 points to lead Wichita State to a 55-43 lead over GCU at the T-Mobile Center on Monday afternoon.

There is no way to sugar coat it for GCU fans. The Lopes were bad.

Coming off a big win over Grambling on Friday at GCU Arena, there was talk the Lopes had turned a corner. Rayshon Harrison had a breakout game. The defense was stout. And the Lopes were for real.

Wichita State had other plans on Monday. The Shockers held GCU to just 26.7 percent shooting and a season-low 43 points. Porter Jr. and the Wichita State guards held Rayshon Harrison and Jovan Blacksher Jr. to a combined 11 points. 11. Along with that, Harrison and Blacksher Jr. were a combined 0-8 from 3-point range and 2-24 from the field overall.

Wichita State led for almost 36 minutes and there was just one tie and one lead change in the contest.

Despite back-to-back buckets from Gabe McGlothan that cut the deficit to four with 16:54 to play, the Lopes could never get over the hump. A 12-0 run by the Shockers midway through the second half pushed the lead to 16 and that was all she wrote.

Jaykwon Walton was also in double figures for the Shockers with 10 points.

Noah Baumann was the only Lope in double figures with 10 points off the bench. Aidan Igiehon had six points and seven rebounds off the bench. And Josh Baker had seven points and four rebounds.

The Lopes await the loser of San Francisco and Northern Iowa.

GCU is now 3-2 overall and has scored 60 or fewer points in three of those five contests, thus far.
