2022-23 Conference Matchups for Men and Women are Out

The Western Athletic Conference released its conference matchups for the 2022-23 season on Monday. Teams will play 18 conference games.

And from first glance, it appears the philosophy was to put the best against each other twice.

Looking at the women’s matchups, that is arguably the truth. UTA will play Stephen F. Austin and Grand Canyon twice in WAC play. The Lady Mavs won the Sun Belt Conference Tourney in 2021-22 and made to the NCAA Tournament. Stephen F. Austin won the WAC Tournament before losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. And Grand Canyon has been to back-to-back conference tourney title games. All three are expected to be in the race for the regular season title.

On the men’s side, it is nearly a similar story. CBU, NMSU, GCU play each other twice. We will have two games between NMSU and SFA. GCU will also take on SFA twice, as well.

As part of this, teams will play six opponents twice and six others just one time. Utah Valley and Utah Tech have perhaps three of the toughest home games in hosting New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin. If you remember right, Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin did not have to travel to Orem or St. George in 2021-22. UTA will have three brutal road games in its first year in the WAC. The Mavericks have to go to Abilene Christian, Grand Canyon and New Mexico State.

According to Associate Commissioner Drew Speraw, there were a lot of parameters used in determining the matchups including geography and competitiveness.

Due to having 13 members, there is going to be some issues with scheduling. But from the matchups the WAC put out, it is going to be quite the 2022-23 season. The fact that GCU and NMSU play each other twice in the Aggies final season in the WAC is going to be fun. And you love to see that Speraw has the Utah schools playing each other twice. All in all, the matchups look really good.
